Mechanic I (Permanent Full-Time)

The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is seeking the services of an experienced heavy-duty mechanic to complement the existing team within the Public Works and Development department. The successful candidate will be required to perform skilled work in the maintenance and repair of all heavy equipment owned by the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor. Work involves responsibility for the performance of journeyperson-level tasks and is critical to ensuring vehicles are safe and in good working order to be operated by our staff. Reporting to a Public Works supervisor, the successful candidate will receive general instructions as to work assignments and is expected to carry them out under minimal supervision in accordance with accepted practices and precautions.
DUTIES
- Maintains all town-owned vehicles and equipment in optimum working condition.
- Assists Chief Mechanic in keeping maintenance and repair records to code and up to date on all town vehicles and equipment.
- Advises Chief Mechanic of condition of town-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Keeps mechanical shop clean and free of safety hazards.
- Other duties as outlined in Town of Grand Falls-Windsor Job Description Manual.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic certificate issued by the provincial Department of Education.
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a journeyperson.
- Minimum of one year’s experience performing work on municipal heavy equipment such as snowplow, loader, sweeper, dump truck, excavator.
- Demonstrable knowledge of computer skills for electronic systems that manage work orders and other record-keeping.
- Demonstrable knowledge of diagnostic applications for heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Must possess Class 5 driver’s license as issued by Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Must be able to provide a clear certificate of conduct from a police criminal record check.
- Possession of Class 3,8 or 9 license would be an asset.
- Experience working within a municipal setting would be an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for an exceptional candidate who does not meet the required qualifications.
SALARY
As per CUPE Local 1349 Collective Agreement ($31.88 per hour).
