TOWN OF GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR SUPPORTIVE OF CANCER CLINIC REQUESTS
Posted on
The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is supportive of the recent announcement by four Internal Medicine Physicians at the Central Newfoundland Regional Healthcare Centre that they will cease cancer care operations unless specific, critical requests are delivered by our provincial government. These doctors’ decision to take such a stand is a testament to the dire situation at hand, and we call for immediate action to address their concerns.
The demands laid out by our local cancer doctors are not just requests; they are a plea for essential support needed to continue offering the high standard of care that our citizens deserve. These demands are for the recruitment of additional specialist staff, including two full-time clerical staff, another full-time nurse, a PCA or similar, and a Nurse Practitioner or GPO. These additional staff, found in other cancer care clinics in the province, are fundamental to ensure that our region, and indeed our province, can offer a fighting chance against cancer to those affected.
Furthermore, we must address the inequity in the distribution of resources among cancer care clinics across our province. It is disheartening to learn that the cancer care clinic serving Grand Falls-Windsor and surrounding areas does not have access to the same level of resources as other clinics within the province. This discrepancy not only undermines the principle of fairness but also compromises the quality of care that our residents receive. Health care, especially cancer care, should be universally accessible and equitable, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their geographical location, receives the same high standard of treatment and support. We strongly urge the provincial government to rectify this inequity and ensure that our cancer care clinic is provided with the resources it needs to operate on par with other facilities across the province. Equal treatment for all regions is not just a matter of fairness; it is a matter of life and death for many of our community members.
The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor stands in solidarity with our healthcare professionals. We believe that meeting these demands is not just an investment in our healthcare system but an essential step towards preserving the lives and dignity of our citizens. We urge the provincial government to engage in immediate, constructive dialogue with our local physicians to find a viable solution to this pressing issue. We implore you to consider the urgency of this situation and to act promptly in addressing the needs of our healthcare professionals.
Signed,
Mayor Barry Manuel,
on behalf of the Town Council of Grand Falls-Windsor
