PUBLIC ADVISORY – Badger Wildfire Aid
Posted on
The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is actively supporting our neighbours in Badger as they face an evacuation due to a nearby wildfire.
We are currently providing mutual aid assistance and working closely with provincial fire emergency services to help coordinate efforts and ensure the safety and well-being of all affected residents.
As part of our support response:
- Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium is being used as a reception centre for evacuees. Town staff are on-site assisting the Canadian Red Cross with registration of Badger residents as they arrive.
- To allow clear and consistent access to the Stadium, Jones Street is closed to all traffic until further notice.
- Centennial Field (Shanawdithit Centennial Park) is open for Badger residents needing a place to safely store campers, RVs, skidoos, quads, and large items. 24/7 security will be on-site.
- Pets are welcome. If you are evacuating and bringing pets, we encourage you to bring a crate or kennel if available, to help with safe and comfortable sheltering. SPCA is also offering pet assistance, call 709-489-3604
- Please be advised there will be increased traffic in the Grand Falls-Windsor area, particularly between here and Badger. We ask all residents to use extra caution and patience on the roads.
At this time, there is no immediate threat to Grand Falls-Windsor, but we encourage all residents to remain cautious and prepared, as conditions can change quickly during wildfire season.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has issued a province-wide fire ban, effective immediately. This includes open fires, campfires, and the use of fireworks. Please do your part to reduce fire risks and follow all safety advisories.
We extend our full support to the community of Badger during this difficult time and thank our residents for their understanding and cooperation as we assist in this emergency response.
