GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL – The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador on a new affordable housing project that will support two families in our community.
A Groundbreaking Ceremony took place earlier today at 19 ½ Riverview Road, the future site of a Habitat duplex-style home. This project is the result of collaboration that began in 2022, when the Town first entered discussions with Habitat for Humanity NL. In January 2023, the Town officially donated the parcel of land – originally acquired through Crown Lands – to Habitat for Humanity NL to help bring the project to life. To further support the build, the Town undertook the necessary zoning amendments at its own cost.
In addition, key site servicing work is being funded through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF). This includes the installation of a waterline and storm line, along with curb, gutter, and new asphalt to support safe and accessible road access for the homes.
The project will receive up to $170,000 in joint federal and provincial funding through the National Housing Strategy.
“We are excited to be partnering with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor on this new initiative that will assist two working, lower income families with affordable homeownership,” said Sandra Whiffen, CEO of Habitat for Humanity NL. “Working together with our community partners, we will help working, lower income families who are struggling to build strength, stability and independence through affordable housing. With generous support, it will allow us to serve more families yearly across Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Mayor Barry Manuel emphasized the importance of housing partnerships in supporting long-term community growth. “Affordable housing is one of the most pressing needs in communities like ours. We’re proud to support this project and contribute land to make it a reality,” he said. “This partnership with Habitat for Humanity NL will help two local families achieve the dream of homeownership and build a stronger foundation for their future – and for our community as a whole.”
“The Provincial Government is pleased to continue our partnership with Habitat for Humanity as they fulfill their mission of helping families in this province achieve pride of home ownership,” said the Honourable John G. Abbott, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “These two homes will serve as the foundation on which two families will build their lives.”
This project marks the first Habitat for Humanity build in Grand Falls-Windsor and reflects the Town’s broader commitment to addressing housing challenges and creating inclusive, livable neighbourhoods.
