ATV Safety

The Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP will be conducting targeted education & enforcement patrols around ATV’s/Off-Road Vehicles over the next coming weeks.
The RCMP would like to remind the public of the following rules and safety tips regarding their all-terrain vehicle (ATV) usage:
1. Get trained by a qualified ATV instructor and practice safe riding techniques at all times. The knowledge of proper techniques is crucial when maintaining control on hills, rough terrain and in turns.
2. Off-Road Vehicles Safety Training *NEW*
Effective October 15, 2024, off-road vehicles safety training is mandatory for:
– operators under the age of 16
– those registering an off-road vehicle for the first time
– anyone convicted of an offence under the Act or Regulations, who has had their registration suspended or cancelled, and is required by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles to complete it
Also, anyone who supervises the operation of an off-road vehicle, by a person under the age of 16 years of age, must ensure the person being supervised has received training.
3. Riders should always wear a helmet.
4. When the road turns from asphalt to dirt, the rules and laws of the road continue to apply. Failure to do so could result in provincial fines, as well as the vehicle being towed.
5. Riders should never operate an ATV while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
6. The average complaint to police and city bylaw officers regarding ATVs and quads stems from the lack of courtesy and lack of safety of drivers.
7. ATVs are prohibited from using public roads, highways, parks, and trails. Often, riders are found speeding through public roadways in order to get to their riding destination. These vehicles are not designed or equipped for highway use and as such are considered unsafe.
8. Speeds should be kept under control for everyone’s safety.
9. ATVs should have proper functioning mufflers to control the noise.
