The town of Grand Falls – Windsor launches fireworks usage campaign
Posted on
The Town of Grand Falls-Windsor launched a campaign today to its citizens regarding the use of fireworks on Canada Day. The Town is encouraging residents to only discharge fireworks between dusk and 11:00 PM on July 1, 2021, and to notify close neighbours about their plans.
Town residents have expressed concern in the past about the use of fireworks on non-traditional days, at varying hours of the night. After much discussion among Council and staff, as well as consultation with other municipalities, the Town decided to launch an education campaign to show the public how consideration of others can spare an individual of trauma.
This campaign includes three testimonial videos from communities who are adversely affected by the unplanned use of fireworks. Terry O’Neill is a local pet owner who recently started a social media campaign for stricter regulations of fireworks. Jeannette Coates works with the Autism Society of NL and knows first-hand the variety of issues that fireworks can cause for members of her community. Lastly, Amy Palmer with the Canadian Mental Health Association speaks about how fireworks impact individuals who live with mental health problems and illnesses.
